Content marketing is creating content to impress and create an awareness of yourself. For young millennials, fresh out of Uni, establishing yourself as a knowledgeable expert in your field online is a great way to market the brand that is ‘you’.

Writing articles and blogs is often seen as the ‘best’ way of establishing expert status.

This is changing.

Visual stimulus is the norm in how we consume information today. Think of what we grew up with, reading essays and blog posts? Most likely, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and images are what we enjoyed viewing. Buffer says there can be increases of up to 200% in views when visual stimulus is added to content.

Before anything, let’s look at what are the most used methods.

Yes, pictures can mean thousand words. Using an image that relates to what you are saying is a great way to hammer home your point.

Infographics are on the rise, where information and data are represented visually.

It puts statistics into perspective, with often cutesy pie graphs and colours used, with visual pointers to highlight important points.

How does this help me, as a young millennial, trying to market themselves through content?

+Use image based aids to emphasise, not replace.

-Though research indicates that images help in increase the traffic on your profile or site, it doesn’t mean go full image mode. 2015 data suggests that heavy image use decreases interaction is some cases (Hubspot).

+Think of images as something akin to a gesture. Gestures emphasise important points you make in a speech; waving your hands and arms around constantly is a bit unsettling and gets in the way of the actual substance of your speech.

+Use images sparingly to home in on core points. Also, if you use images only when you need to, the effect an image has on your content will always be powerful.


It’s all up to you.


Images should be seen as another technique to use to strengthen your content marketing strategy. Relevance to your strategy, and to the content you are posting is key when using images.

Example: Having professional images on your Instagram site, showcasing your photography skills (You are aiming to be a professional photographer).

Obviously, taking pictures and posting them is a must if you want to be a photographer. Aim to see how your strategy and content could benefit using images.

Example: Have an infographic depicting the trends in using certain financial instruments. Have a before and after figures, where depict the movement after guidelines change in regards to the cooling off period of these instruments.

In this example, as a financial student, creating a case study like this to showcase your up to date knowledge and insight into how laws and the finance market interact is awesome. An infographic is effective here as differences are key in pointing to what your findings are; images are awesomely effective in showing this difference.

As mentioned before, images need to be incorporated into your content strategy, and also into your content itself.

Don’t: Pretty everything up with infographics and visual pointers.
